The UDL Guidelines are a tool to support educators, curriculum developers, researchers, parents, and more to apply the UDL framework to practice. These guidelines offer a set of concrete suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities.
The UDL Guidelines are organized into three principles: EngagementRepresentation, and Action & Expression. When a variety of options are available to provide multiple means of approaching each principle, barriers are reduced and access to that principle is increased.
Explore the UDL Guidelines website to access full descriptions of each guideline and associated considerations.

Growing minds benefit from dynamic movement!

Research is now confirming what many of us known intuitively: moderate movement can improve focus and concentration. Sometimes the simplest thing can help, like standing up or bracing your legs on a footrest.

As children’s brains develop, sensory systems that respond to movement help cultivate the fine motor skills that are at the foundation of learning. These sensory systems help coordinate the eyes, hands and bodies of children as they move and grow. “Healthy” movement facilitates such growth, while helping children feel active and alert – even while seated.

Sitting still is not the same as paying attention – people of all ages tend to zone out or fall asleep when inactive. As a result, we all naturally engage in dynamic sitting, which involves moving our arms and legs or adjusting our position for comfort in order to stay alert and engaged.

Co-Teaching as a Vehicle to Inclusion
Thursday January 30, 2025 10:15am - 11:30am PST
Session Resources
In this session, we will explore the evolution of co-teaching within Tracy Unified School District. We’ll begin by discussing our early co-teaching efforts, highlighting the challenges and successes that laid the foundation for a more inclusive approach.

Next, we’ll examine current practices and how UDL principles have transformed our instructional methods to better support students with disabilities. The introduction of a TOSA has been crucial in providing resources and support for educators and students.

We'll also discuss revisions made to IEPs in co-taught content areas, emphasizing the alignment of these plans with priority standards to ensure all students can access a rigorous curriculum. Ongoing PD has been essential, equipping teachers with the tools needed to implement UDL effectively.

Through collaborative efforts, we’ve created an environment where all students can thrive, sharing success stories that highlight the positive impact of these initiatives. This session aims to inspire educators to embrace UDL as a pathway to inclusive learning experiences that meet the diverse needs of every learner. Join us as we share our journey to promote inclusion through innovative teaching strategies.

Thursday January 30, 2025 12:30pm - 1:45pm PST
In this immersive session, we'll explore how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines and SEL are not separate initiatives adding to teachers’ already busy schedules, but powerful frameworks that build upon each other. Together, they create a unified approach to support students in a way that transcends traditional boundaries. We'll delve into how UDL, celebrated for its inclusive instructional practices, seamlessly integrates with CASEL's 5 Core Competencies, which nurture students' social and emotional growth. Throughout our session, you'll gain practical insights into how these frameworks bridge academic and emotional growth, support student voice and choice, and promote a culture of respect and empathy. By the end of this workshop, you'll see how these frameworks align and amplify each other, enriching your teaching practice and student support.

While the science of reading tells us what is essential for building a reader, the science of learning tells us the conditions that are necessary for learning to thrive and last. Professional readings and discussions will ground the session as well as lesson and video analysis to connect the research to practice. Come to learn more about how combining the science of learning with the science of reading has the potential to meet the needs of the whole child and support the development of independent learners.

Thursday January 30, 2025 12:30pm - 1:45pm PST
This session explores the impact of coaching in implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) across diverse educational settings, from county-wide initiatives to district and school-level support. Grounded in the belief that UDL unlocks equitable learning opportunities, we will demonstrate how coaching enhances its implementation by providing educators with targeted guidance.

At the county level, we collaborate with districts and charter schools to create universal professional learning pathways that empower coaches, TOSAs, and instructional leaders to foster inclusive environments and scale best practices.

District-wide, our coaching expertise helps align system-wide UDL goals with supplemental support and instructional improvements, supporting LCAP objectives and increasing access for all learners.

At the school-site level, instructional coaches are equipped to bridge theory and practice, guiding teachers in applying UDL strategies to daily instruction and fostering flexible learning environments for diverse students.

Designed for those advancing equitable education, this session highlights the transformative role of coaching through UDL in creating inclusive classrooms.

Integration of Educational Technology with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Special Education Settings, Focusing on Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (Virtual presentation in person & Hybrid)
Thursday January 30, 2025 2:00pm - 3:15pm PST
Session Resources
In this virtual session, the integration of educational technology with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to enhance special education for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will be explored. The research examines how UDL principles and educational technology work together to address the unique language and social challenges faced by these students.

The researchers conducted phenomenological interviews with teachers and reviewed educational materials. The findings demonstrate that technology plays a crucial role in improving communication and social interactions for students with ASD. Key features of effective technology were identified, along with how it enhances UDL practices, and the benefits of a collaborative professional learning community.

The framework developed serves as a practical guide for educators, illustrating how technology can support, rather than replace, UDL principles. This approach ensures equitable access to educational resources and fosters a more inclusive experience for all students, particularly those with ASD.

Friday January 31, 2025 8:30am - 9:45am PST
This session is not available. Does All truly mean each? This central question anchored our school district’s journey to realizing the vision of closing the opportunity gap for students with disabilities with a design to the margins approach. During this session, you will learn about the systems, structures and practices that facilitated the implementation of UDL as an instructional framework as a core design principle. Through sharing our journey, you will also learn about the challenges we experienced when historically systems have worked in favor of a majority of our students and the impetus of change in mindsets and practices is not apparent. Our use of data systems and shining the light on promising practices while also highlighting data gaps were our launch point into inclusive practices.. Leadership learning, both Principal and teacher leadership for UDL continues to be our key driver in this shift. A session focused on the why, how and what of UDL implementation in a school district - a theory to practical application approach! Whether you are new to UDL or on your way to implementation; whether you are a teacher, teacher-leader, principal or a district leader, this session is designed just for you!

Empowering Critical GenAI Literacy with UDL 3.0 (In person & Hybrid)
Friday January 31, 2025 11:30am - 12:45pm PST
Teaching and leading for critical digital media literacy now includes cultivating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) literacy to decipher fact from misinformation and disinformation, identifying those perpetuated by bots, countering messages and systems that reinforce stereotypes and harm, and exploring new ways of learning. Preparing youth for democracy with civic engagement strategies include creating digital media content as part of project based learning (PBL), universal design for learning (UDL), culturally relevant and critical digital pedagogy. How might we facilitate learning in which youth reimagine and create the future?

In this session, education leaders will cultivate critical digital leadership with UDL to counter oppression and co-design systems that are responsive to learner variability and the rapidly changing contexts of digital media and generative AI. Critical digital leadership leads to learning that critically interrogates power, representation, agency, digital media, and technologies by decoding, meaning-making, analyzing, persona (exploring identity), and using digital tools for critical digital consumption, production, distribution, and invention. Example lessons and supporting resources will be provided.

Universal Design for SEL: Trauma-Informed Artmaking for All Classrooms
Friday January 31, 2025 11:30am - 12:45pm PST
This interactive, hands-on session emphasizes the transformative power of inclusive social-emotional practices through a universally-designed program implemented across four institutions. Using trauma-informed artmaking strategies, this program supports SEL for all students, particularly at-promise youth. Over twenty months of data collection demonstrate notable improvements in students' emotional well-being, showcasing the program’s effectiveness for diverse learners. No prior art experience or training is required for facilitators or students, ensuring that the program is universally accessible and easy to implement. Designed with non-arts teachers in mind, the strategies presented can be integrated into any learning environment, making them applicable to all subjects, not just fine arts. Participants will explore how universally-designed, trauma-informed artmaking fosters emotional resilience, mitigates trauma, and aligns with SEL competencies. Takeaways include a replicable framework, a list of trauma-informed strategies, and a sample lesson to help participants integrate these inclusive practices into their own institutions.
