Experiencing UDL: Designing Lessons That Engage and Empower All Learners
Thursday January 30, 2025 2:00pm - 3:15pm PST
In this interactive session, participants will explore the power of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) through an integrated arts, SEL, and ELA lesson designed for diverse learners. Attendees will experience the lesson as students, applying UDL’s core principles: barriers are in the design, variability is expected, and learner agency is the goal. After the hands-on activity, they’ll deconstruct the lesson to identify design elements that support flexibility and various learning needs. Through reflection and group discussion, participants will deepen their understanding of how UDL can enhance inclusivity across subjects and grades. They’ll also gain practical strategies for integrating UDL into lesson planning and professional development, ensuring all learners can engage, access content, and express learning in ways that suit them best. This session is ideal for educators and leaders seeking to create more inclusive, learner-centered environments.

Implementing CO-Teaching Through UDL: A Middle School Success Story
Friday January 31, 2025 8:30am - 9:45am PST
Discover how the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can transform co-teaching in middle school settings to support diverse learners. This session will showcase a successful co-teaching model implemented at a Bay Area middle school, where educators worked collaboratively to break down barriers to learning and create more inclusive classrooms.

Using UDL as a guiding framework, this co-teaching approach ensures that all students—regardless of their learning needs—have access to multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression. Attendees will explore how the team structured their lessons to provide flexible learning pathways, promote student agency, and foster a collaborative culture between general and special education teachers. Through real-world examples, we’ll highlight specific strategies used to ensure that learning objectives are accessible to every student, including those with IEPs and those identified as English Learners.

Whether you’re new to UDL or looking to refine your co-teaching practice, this session will offer valuable insights into creating more equitable and engaging learning environments for middle school students.

Universal Design for SEL: Trauma-Informed Artmaking for All Classrooms
Friday January 31, 2025 11:30am - 12:45pm PST
This interactive, hands-on session emphasizes the transformative power of inclusive social-emotional practices through a universally-designed program implemented across four institutions. Using trauma-informed artmaking strategies, this program supports SEL for all students, particularly at-promise youth. Over twenty months of data collection demonstrate notable improvements in students' emotional well-being, showcasing the program’s effectiveness for diverse learners. No prior art experience or training is required for facilitators or students, ensuring that the program is universally accessible and easy to implement. Designed with non-arts teachers in mind, the strategies presented can be integrated into any learning environment, making them applicable to all subjects, not just fine arts. Participants will explore how universally-designed, trauma-informed artmaking fosters emotional resilience, mitigates trauma, and aligns with SEL competencies. Takeaways include a replicable framework, a list of trauma-informed strategies, and a sample lesson to help participants integrate these inclusive practices into their own institutions.
